NORDIC WALKING EXPLAINED…
Done properly and with the correct training, Nordic walking can provide a total body workout whilst enjoying the outdoors and the company of like minded individuals.
All ages welcome for our weekly sessions at a cost of £8. A session typically takes an hour and a half from meeting to finish followed by a chance to refresh with coffee and a chat. We usually cover up to 5 miles with longer walks on offer if you like a challenge.
Nordic walking is performed with specially designed walking poles that are similar to ski poles.
Nordic Walking was originally developed as a form of off season training for cross country skiers.
Nordic Walking has been made popular in the UK by Nordic Walking UK Ltd. where you can find information and everything you need to know connected to Nordic Walking.
Nordic Walking differs from normal walking and involves applying force to the poles through the upper body with each step. Nordic Walkers use a greater proportion of their entire body strength and therefore receive fitness building stimulation not found in ordinary walking. Nordic Walkers can expect to achieve a greater benefit to upper body, back and arms and achieve much greater calorific expenditure than ordinary walking. Exercising in the outdoors, has a positive effect on mood, reduces stress levels and increases the opportunity for social interaction and access to green space in your community.
- Nordic Walking turns walking into a workout by using 90% of the body’s muscles.
- burns 20-40% more calories than normal walking with less effort.
- expect up to 400 + calories burned per hour.
- lessens the impact on your knees, hips and ankle joints.
- can help combat the affects of osteoporosis.
- good for releasing tension in the back, neck and shoulders.
- compliments a good diet and fitness regime of all types.
- affordable way to keep fit.
- sociable and fun way of meeting new people.
- great way to discover your local areas of beauty.

Some feedback from the regulars...
I have been Nordic walking with Karen for 2 years now and I have noticed a vast improvement with my fitness. A great way to do 10,000 steps, enjoy good company and the great outdoors.
Just a note to say how much my sister and I enjoyed the Nordic walking course in Priory Park.
We were both looking for something to encourage us to get out more and do something a bit more energetic than our usual dog walking and cycling and boy have we found it !
The course was an” excellent introduction to Nordic walking –when I told a friend about the course, her immediate response was “why do you need to go on a course to learn how to walk ?
But of course there’s much more to it than just putting one foot in front of the other –the correct technique ensures you get an upper body workout as well as working the leg muscles and the poles encourage you to propel yourself forward at a faster pace than you might go at without them so raising the heart rate, perfect for those of us whose walking speed is not as fast as it used to be.
The whole thing was a thoroughly enjoyable, sociable experience so much so that we have both bought poles so we can continue on our own family walks and we will be joining one of your walking groups soon – a much better investment in future health than a gym subscription!
I am so grateful to you for your help and encouragement in improving my walking, and for the enjoyment
of the walks (Wyevale to Brockham has become a favourite expedition).
The Nordic walking has been immensely helpful and I would certainly recommend it to anyone with similar problems.
So Thank you so much Karen for all your help
Every good wish
" I've been Nordic Walking now for two years, thanks to a chance meeting with Karen whilst I was out walking. I'd never heard of this type of exercise before but haven't looked back since. It's a real life changer.....saver actually! You meet lovely people, make new friends and get to see beautiful countryside. Great way to keep in shape and stay healthy without over doing it!"

" I hadn't realised how many extra calories (and muscles!) Nordic Walking uses compared to my usual dog walks. I look forward to my Monday morning slot - a great way to kick start my week"
Julie - Reigate
"For me, Nordic Walking ticks all the boxes. If you prefer to get your exercise by walking in the Surrey Hills with like-minded friends to being in the artificial atmosphere of a gym then this is for you. Karen Grace is particularly mindful of everyone’s level of fitness and organises sessions to suit. Come along and have a taster session, I did and that was 6 or 7 years ago, best thing I ever did"
